Stanley Turrentine (1934–2000) was a legendary tenor saxophonist and record producer, who gained prominence as a major figure in the crossover of hard bop and soul-jazz.

Turrentine was born in Pittsburgh, into a musical family. He started in R&B bands, before joining Max Roach’s band. He released a prolific run of albums on Blue Note as a leader, and together with organist Jimmy Smith. In 1960 he married the organist Shirley Scott and the two recorded several records together. At the turn of the 1970s his music became more fusion-focused, and he delivered several albums for CTI and Fantasy. Turrentine continued to record through the 1980s and 1990s, appearing on hundreds of albums.
