Young was a pivotal figure in the swing era and a key member of the Count Basie Orchestra, renowned for his smooth playing style. Young also recorded with Nat “King” Cole and Billie Holiday, who gave him the nickname “Prez.” His solo recordings, such as "Lester Leaps In" showcased his lyrical improvisations, and inspired a generation of sax players from Coltrane to Konitz. Young passed away at age 49. After his death, Charles Mingus immortalised him in the eulogy “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat,” and Young remains celebrated as a jazz icon.
