Jay Jay Johnson (1924–2001) was a trombonist and composer, considered by many as the finest jazz trombonist of all time and one of the earliest to embrace bebop.

Johnson was born in Indianapolis and was a leading figure in bebop. Influenced by Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, he expanded what was possible on the trombone. He played with big bands like Count Basie’s Orchestra, as well as with bebop icons. His debut album on Blue Note in 1955 “The Eminent Jay Jay Johnson” showcased his mastery of his instrument as well as his compositional prowess. Later he moved to California and composed for film and television.
