Julian Edwin “Cannonball” Adderley (1928–1975), was an influential jazz saxophonist and bandleader, known for his exuberant and soulful playing style.

Adderley became a sensation on the New York scene of the 1950s. His talents inspired many comparisons to a young Charlie Parker. After forming his first band alongside his brother Nat, Adderley rose to prominence as a member of the legendary Miles Davis Sextet in 1958. Reuniting with his brother a year later, Cannonball formed his own quintet, which turned into a sextet with the addition of Yusef Lateef. These bands produced a string of successful albums, and became the leading group for the new style of soul jazz, which continues to inspire generations to this day
