Akinmusire was born and raised in Oakland and caught the ear of saxophonist Steve Coleman while he was still in high school. Akinmusire studied at Manhattan School of Music, and in 2007 won the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition. Later that year, Akinmusire released his debut album “Prelude to Cora” which showcased his inventive changes and spacious, fluent playing. His sophomore album “When The Heart Emerges Glistening” started a decade-long run of albums for Blue Note. In 2015, he featured on rapper Kendrick Lamar’s award-winning album “To Pimp A Butterfly.” Akinmusire’s eighth album “Owl Song” saw him collaborate with guitarist Bill Frisell and drummer Herlin Riley.
