Jamal’s virtuosic but never overpowering approach to the piano was characterised by a refined touch, impeccable phrasing, and a masterful use of space and dynamics. Together with Israel Crosby and Vernel Fournier he formed the iconic Ahmad Jamal Trio, which gained international acclaim with their groundbreaking live recordings at Chicago's Pershing Lounge in the 1950s. His influential tune “Poinciana”, released in 1958, became a jazz standard. Ahmad Jamal’s compositions blended bebop, swing, and classical influences, creating an introspective sonic texture that continued to inspire the hip-hop generation, as he became one of the most sampled artists of all time.
