Thelonious Monk: Genius Of Modern Music Vol. 1

The legendary pianist and composer, Thelonious Monk, made his earliest recordings as a leader for Blue Note in 1947 and 1948 ,as heard on the 1956 12” compilation “Genius of Modern Music, Volume One.” Featuring timeless Monk compositions including “’Round Midnight,” “Ruby My Dear,” “In Walked Bud,” and “Well You Needn’t,” it’s an essential slice of early bebop.

Thelonious Monk: Genius Of Modern Music Vol. 2

Thelonious Monk was a little-known figure on the New York City bebop scene when Blue Note founder Alfred Lion discovered and fell in love with the pianist’s utterly unique music and offered Monk his first opportunity to record as a leader in 1947. Over the next five years Lion recorded Monk in a variety of different settings performing his singular compositions. In 1956, Blue Note transitioned from the 10” to the 12” LP and began the 1500 Series releasing two expanded Monk compilations including Genius of Modern Music, Vol. 2 (BLP 1511) which presented classic Monk tunes like “Straight No Chaser,” “Four In One,” and “Monk’s Mood” and featured one of Reid Miles’ earliest cover designs for the label.

Everything Jazz Posterzine® #02: The Piano Issue

Issue 2 of the Everything Jazz Posterzine® takes to the keyboard for a celebration of the piano. It includes an exclusive poster featuring an early photograph of the piano pioneer Thelonious Monk shot at Minton’s Playhouse in 1947 by William P. Gottlieb, and a cover image of Keith Jarrett by Roberto Masotti.

Inside the Zine: With the help of pianists Jeff Goldblum, Gerald Clayton, and Harold López-Nussa, we’ve ranked the 25 best piano albums of all time (in our opinion) - how many do you have? Singer and broadcaster Jumoké Fashola surveys the art of the singer / pianist. From Jon Batiste to Nina Simone, these singers can make the piano seriously swing.

The Everything Jazz Posterzine® folds out from an A4 zine filled with stories and images, into an exclusive A1 poster. It is the only poster in the world registered with the British Library as a magazine.

Words by Freya Hellier, Stephan Kunze and Jumoké Fashola.

Photography by William P. Gottlieb and Roberto Masotti.
