Duke Ellington and Coleman Hawkins
Duke Ellington and Coleman Hawkins: Duke Ellington Meets Coleman Hawkins (Verve Acoustic Sounds Series) LP
Impulse!, 1963
Coleman Hawkins was an early virtuoso and major stylist of the tenor saxophone. A key figure in the development of Swing music, he was blessed with a warm, honeyed tone and an impeccable sense of time. Here he relaxes into a dream date with the legendary bandleader Duke Ellington and a half a dozen musicians handpicked from Ellington’s famous orchestra. With a repertoire drawn from the orchestra’s set-list, the pieces are arranged beautifully for this smaller configuration, and Hawkins’ tender voicings sound completely at home. It’s a joy from start to finish.
