The second of Jon Batiste's recordings taken from his November 2018 residency at New York's Village Vanguard, “Chronology of a Dream: Live at the Village Vanguard” is a vibrant set with the pianist and vocalist backed by a whip-smart band digging into the energy of 60s and 70s hard bop and soul. Several of Batiste’s originals get definitive readings, from the irrepressible funk of “Blacck,” to the brass-heavy R&B groove of “Birthe.” There are also a couple of heartfelt tributes to Batiste’s former boss, trumpeter Roy Hargrove, who tragically died aged 49 on the first night of recording.
