Growing up in Berkley, California, Redman learnt saxophone from his father, free jazz pioneer Dewey Redman. After graduating from Harvard, he went on to play with many leading musicians of the day, as well as his fathers’ collaborators, including greats like bassist Charlie Haden, drummer Billy Higgins, and guitarist Pat Metheny. His self-titled debut album in 1993 was nominated for a Grammy Award, and Redman has since continued his trademark of reinterpreting songs from the wider funk and rock songbooks with his signature meditative saxophone melodies. Redman has also recorded albums with the supergroup of Christian McBride, Brian Blade and pianist Brad Mehldau, and his 2023 album on Blue Note, “Where Are We”, saw him team up with vocalist Gabrielle Cavassa.
