Recorded in 1964 for the soundtrack to Canadian director Gilles Grouix’s movie “Le chat dans le sac”, these previously unreleased performances capture Coltrane between his classic albums “Crescent” and “A Love Supreme” at a time when he was constantly breaking new ground. Here, however, he focuses on tracks recorded earlier in his career, from “Traneing In” (cut with the Red Garland Trio in 1957), up to “Out Of This World” (retitled “Blue World”) from 1962. It’s a rare and fascinating chance to hear Coltrane and his classic quartet in a relaxed setting revisiting familiar themes with assured poise and mastery.
